Jerrie
If this person were music what kind/song would they be?
Acoustic, quiet, soft, but when you listen to the words, there is a message.
I like the song April She Will Come by Simon and Garfunkel for Jerrie.
I like that the lyrics kind of sink behind the sound of the guitar.
I feel like there is a line that can be drawn between the lyric, "June, she'll change her tune
In restless walks she'll prowl the night".
It reminds me of Jerrie in the cornfield.
If this person were a Painting/art style, what would they be?
I chose this image to represent Jerrie. Obviously, the woman is flying and holding a moon, but she is also yellow like corn. It doesn't matter whether she is in a plane or a rocket, Jerrie has an intense desire to fly.
I was unable to find the artist of this image.
If this person were a type of fabric, what would they be?
Jerrie is denim or some other tightly woven work fabric. She is meant to get dirty and is durable. She survives all that is thrown at her. When she is "ripped", she is mended and continues to work.
If this person were an animal, what would they be?
I chose the Yellow Browed Tody to represent Jerrie. This tiny yellow bird is native to the Amazon and lets out a repeated singular metallic sounding note when singing.
If this person were a line, what would they be?
Straight, angled from the ground to the sky
If this person were a Shape, what would they be?
A right triangle, like a ramp for taking off
If this person were a Color, what would they be?
Yellow like corn
If this person were a Texture, what would they be?
Ceramic, smooth on the outside and rough on the inside
If this person were a Pattern, what would they be?
Flannel, a working "man's" print
Jackie
If this person were music what kind/song would they be?
A female-power ballad that reveals that Jackie is really the bad guy.
I like the song, Better Than That by Marina
Particularly these lyrics:
"You're just another in a long line of men she screwed
Just another in a long line of men she knew
Oh yeah, she did, yeah, she did what she wanted to do
Like all the boys before, another dream come true"
and
"She's the apple of everybody's eye
With an angel voice, devil in disguise
Got a sour face like a poisoned fruit
That the boys can taste 'til they're out of use"
If this person were a Painting/art style, would they be?
I loved this piece by Shehzil Malik to represent Jackie. Malik is a feminist artist who created this piece as street art in Pakistan. She then prints her art onto fabric to be made into clothing. I think that this mirrors Jackie and her cosmetic line that led her to become a pilot. Like the character created in this image, Jackie will not back down because she is a woman. She is led to fly like the bird that she holds. She is unapologetically female in a male-dominated world.
If this person were a type of fabric, would they be?
Jackie is silk. She is shiny and crisp, but she is made by worms.
If this person were an animal, would they be?
Jackie is a puma.
These cats are adaptable to a wide variety of habitats, which is why they are found all throughout North and South America... They are ambush predators.

If this person were a line, would they be?
A spiral like a snake
If this person were a Shape, would they be?
A diamond, she exudes a rich quality
If this person were a Color, would they be?
Black, silver, grey, metallic
If this person were a Texture, would they be?
Smooth like glass, things roll right off of her
If this person were a Pattern, would they be?
Damask like fine furniture
Harvey
If this person were music what kind/ song would they be?
A song about the excitement of flying, like Learning to Fly by Pink Floyd
I am drawn to the lyrics, "Can't keep my eyes from the circling sky
Tongue-tied and twisted, just an earth-bound misfit"
If this person were a Painting/art style, would they be?
This line drawing of a dad and daughter making plane gestures by Issara Jarukitjaroon is perfect for Harvey
If this person were a type of fabric, would they be?
Denim, rough and durable
If this person were an animal, would they be?
Birddog, reliable and loyal
If this person were a line, would they be?
Straight arrow, to the point and a guiding force
If this person were a Shape, would they be?
Heart, Harvey has his faults, but he's a good dad
If this person were a Color, would they be?
True blue
If this person were a Texture, would they be?
Rough and callused
If this person were a Pattern, would they be?
Plaid, a working man's print
Jack
If this person were music what kind/ song would they be?
Danger Zone by Kenny Loggins
"Revvin' up your engine
Listen to her howlin' roar
Metal under tension
Beggin' you to touch and go"
If this person were a Painting/art style, would they be?
Abstract art, Jack would twist the meaning to suit him in the moment
If this person were a type of fabric, would they be?
Cotton, gets the job done, but nothing special
If this person were an animal, would they be?
If this person were a line, would they be?
A curve, no where to rest, but at the bottom
If this person were a Shape, would they be?
A hook, he's always looking to hook a new woman
If this person were a Color, would they be?
Beige, bland
If this person were a Texture, would they be?
Tin, cheap metal
If this person were a Pattern, would they be?
Thin stripes, shows up close, but blends as you move farther away
Concept Statement
My concept for the costume design for They Promised Her the Moon by Laurel Ollstein is based in color relationships of the characters and their ties to the earth or the sky.
Jerrie begins in a light tan shorts romper to signify her connection to the corn and to Child 1 and Child 2. She is like them, but she is different because they are colorful and she is not. This is exemplified in the only thing they say to/about her, “She can’t even talk” and “She’s stupid!”
The light tan also connects her to her father, who we see in a light tan thermal and overalls with a green jacket. The green jacket connects to his wife, Helena, who wears a green dress with a light tan collar, a green apron and, later, a green cardigan.
By the time we meet Helena, both Harvey and Jerrie have covered their light tan with the jacket and jumpsuit, respectively to show the family bond is fading.
Jack is wearing a blue flightsuit to connect him to the sky. He is the only character that wears a true flightshit, Jackie and Jerrie wear jumpsuits that call the mind to a flightsuit, but are more feminine.
Jerrie’s flightsuit is the color of corn, while Jacke has a grey one and a black/white striped jumpsuit. Jerrie’s flight suit is loose-fitting where Jackie’s is tailored to show off her figure.
Jackie eventually moves to a pants suit as she gets older and can ride on the reputation she has created and the money that she gets from her husband and her cosmetics business. As her first business is cosmetics, Jackie must look impeccable at all times.
The two congressmen are seen in suits, but they show contrast to one another and hint to their alliances. Anfuso wears a brown suit with a green and yellow sweater vest underneath to link him to the family, primarily Jerrie who is also wearing a brown (flight) jacket. This flight jacket also shows how she is just a much a pilot as Jack the last time she sees him. They are on the same level and that is why he can’t be with her anymore.
Waggonner wears a grey suit that links him more closely to Jackie who is dressed in black and fur. They are on the same team, even though Jackie thinks what he says is disgusting, it is worth it to her to align with him to get one over on Jerrie. Waggonner wears a red, white and blue tie because he is an American congressman.
Lovelace is in grey to link him to Jackie, but he takes off and puts on the coat depending on the strength of their relationship.
