Realization
Scene: 1
Characters: (L to R) Harvey, Jerrie
Dialogue: Muffled "Jerrie"
Explanation: I wanted to link Jerrie to the other childrens' shorts (next image), but also to her father's overalls and to give the beginning hints of a flight suit, so I chose a shorts romper. Harvey and Jerrie are both in light tan. This is a light color because they are pure and good, but also just a slight hint of color to blend with the corn. The romper is a wide weave linen and Harvey's shirt is a thermal. These fabrics and denim have a texture to them that gives the impression that these people are earthy and connected to the land.
Scene: 1
Characters: (L to R) Jerrie, Child 2, Child 1
Dialogue: "She can't even talk!"
"She's stupid."
"You're stupid."
Explanation: I wanted to link Jerrie to the other children (shorts), but she is clearly an outsider so I put them in color while keeping Jerrie in light tan. The other children are in cottons of a smooth texture to imply that they are "better off" than Jerrie. This represents their opinion of themselves.
Scene: 3
Characters: (L to R) Lovelace, Jackie
Dialogue: "Who is the most famous woman pilot in aviation history?"
"Amelia Earhart."
Explanation: I wanted Jackie to be linked to Lovelace, but also to Jerrie. Lovelace and Jackie are both in grey. The fabrics of Lovelace's jacket and Jackie's costumes are smooth and shiny. Jackie wears a jumpsuit to give hint of a flightsuit, but her jumpsuit is tailored to follow the lines of her body to make it apparent that Jackie has money and is conscious of how her looks get her what she wants.
Scene: 5
Characters: (L to R) Helena, Jerrie
Dialogue: "When I think of things that--didn't go the way I'd hoped--I put that thought in a little jar. And I close that lid very tight. And place that jar way back in the pantry. Behind the pickles."
Explanation: I wanted Helena to feel earthy, as well. Her dress was made of a brushed cotton similar to flannel so that it had some texture. She was dressed in green so we understood she was linked to the earth, but not in the same way as Jerrie and Harvey. Her collar is light tan, and by the time we meet her, Harvey and Jerrie have covered their tan so they just poke out at the collar like Helena. Jerrie has shifted to a goldenrod color (the color of corn) and into a jumpsuit that gives a flightsuit feel. The fit of this jumpsuit is drastically different from the fit of Jackie's jumpsuit.
Scene: 6
Characters: (L to R) Jack, Jerrie
Dialogue: "I'm sure you are, sweetheart."
"I can fly any plane you put me in."
"Oh, can you?"
Explanation: I wanted to link Jerrie to Jack. He doesn't realize that she is a girl when he first walks into the scene, so she sports a baseball hat. Their "flightsuits" mimic each other, but Jack is in a much darker color as he is not a good guy.
Scene: 3
Characters: (L to R) Jerrie, Jackie
Dialogue: "I I I said... I would go into space even if I knew for certain I could never... come... back."
Explanation: Here we see Jackie moving away from her flightsuit. She is older and she no longer needs to be "one of the boys" to get what she wants. She can ride on her reputation and her money to get what she wants. She is impeccably tailored and showing off her figure. She has shifted from grey to black and white as she has broken her alliance with Lovelace and is becoming a darker character. Jerrie is still an active pilot and needs her accomplishments to get people to listen to her. She is also about to face-off again Jack wearing a similar jacket.
Scene: 10
Characters: (L to R) Anfuso
Dialogue: "...we meet this morning to consider the very important problem of determining what are the basic qualifications required for the selection and training of astronauts."
Explanation: I needed Anfuso to be an entirely different character from Harvey, but I wanted them to be played by the same actor because Anfuso is the only person in the congressional hearing on Jerrie's side. I put him in a green and yellow sweater vest to link him to Harvey (he wears a green jacket later that helps link him to Helena) and Jerrie (and the corn), but it needed to be something that Harvey would never wear. He wears a tan suit to contrast Jackie and Waggonner's dark clothing in this scene.
Scene: 10
Characters: (L to R) Waggonner, Jackie
Dialogue: "Wouldn't want to put a woman in space in the wrong time of the month. Would we!?"
Explanation: I wanted to link Waggonner and Waggonner in color and style, so I put Jack in a black jacket with the same shape collar. I really wanted the collar to be fur so that, again, we would see how much money she has. Waggonner wears a tie that is red, white and blue as he is a congressman.
Scene: 11
Characters: (L to R) Jerrie, Harvey
Dialogue: "There is nothing wrong with wanting to win. And you earned it. You did nothing wrong."
Explanation: Here we see Harvey more linked to Helena then Jerrie because he's about to let her go. He knows that when she leaves for the Amazon, he'll never see her again. The story has come full circle and both of them are older now. Harvey is still a little rough in texture while Jerrie has "smoothed" out and is ready to fly on her own.
